THE TRIP

NIGHT ONE

1h20mins approx to Trier, just over 100kms away

We stayed in the

Hotel Porta Nigra, next to the famous Porta Nigra and near a pedestrian street with loads of restaurants and coffee bars for the morning.

TOP TIP

Not sure how to get from A to B? GoogleMaps is great, but when you’re trying to get from the middle of nowhere to the back of beyond, Rome2Rio is an excellent free resource, listing options via train, plane, and automobile (and boat where available!), and estimating both time and cost.

NIGHT TWO

6h30mins approx to Brand, 575kms away, with a stop in Konstanz about five hours in

We stayed in the

Hotel Scesaplana, and arrived to find the kitchens shut and all restaurants in the village closed. It was a hungry night in a beautiful place.

Did somebody say switchbacks_

SPA TO MONZA I

The first time the Belgian and Italian Grands Prix were placed back to back, we opted for an easy start on the Monday, going only as far as Trier before stopping to take in the historic town.

Tuesday's overnight stop in the Austrian Alps led to a long and scenic drive that ended in a town with no food for sale -- not even any leftover bread in the restaurants all closed by 8.30pm.

Needless to say, we opted for a different route the following year. Plan your arrival better and you'll probably have a more enjoyable stay.
